"Researcher" or /ken-kyu/ in Japanese is one of "Status of Residence" defined by Japanese immigration law.
Foreigners staying in Japan with the status of residence of "Researcher" can engage in activities engaged in research that conducts research based on contracts with public and private organizations in Japan.
Persons qualified for "Researcher"
- researchers, investigators
etc.
Academic back ground which meets the requirements of "Researcher" is
- BS degree and 3-year research experience
- BS and MS degree
etc. This can be substituted by 10-year research experience.
"Period of Stay" will be determined among one of the followings.
5-year, 3-year, 1-year or 3-month.
Spouse and/or Children of a person who is staying in Japan under the status of "Researcher" will be qualified for the status "Dependent".

The applicant falls under all of the following requirements; provided, however, that this does not apply to cases in which the applicant seeks to engage in research based on a contract with an organization of the national or local government; a corporation established directly pursuant to Japanese law; a corporation or an incorporated administrative agency (meaning an incorporated administrative agency as prescribed in Article 2, paragraph (1) of the Act on General Rules for Incorporated Administrative Agencies (Act No. 103, 1999); the same applies hereinafter) established pursuant to special Japanese laws and requires the approval of a government agency for its establishment; a corporation which is operated by funds granted by the national government, a local government, or an incorporated administrative agency and specified by the Minister of Justice in public notice.
申請人が次のいずれにも該当していること。ただし、我が国の国若しくは地方公共団体の機関、我が国の法律により直接に設立された法人若しくは我が国の特別の法律により特別の設立行為をもって設立された法人、我が国の特別の法律により設立され、かつ、その設立に関し行政官庁の認可を要する法人若しくは独立行政法人（独立行政法人通則法（平成十一年法律第百三号）第二条第一項に規定する独立行政法人をいう。以下同じ。）又は国、地方公共団体若しくは独立行政法人から交付された資金により運営されている法人で法務大臣が告示をもって定めるものとの契約に基づいて研究を行う業務に従事しようとする場合は、この限りでない。
(i) the applicant has a master's degree or at least 3 years of experience (including the period during which the applicant conducted research at a graduate school) in a field of research related to that which the applicant seeks to engage in, or more than 10 years of experience in such field of research (including the period of research during which the applicant conducted research at a university) after graduating from a university (except for a junior college) or acquiring an education equivalent thereto, or on completing a specialized course of study at an advanced vocational school (limited to cases that fall under the requirements designated in public notice issued by the Minister of Justice regarding the completion); provided, however, that this does not apply to cases in which the applicant seeks to engage in research in a business office in Japan to which the applicant has been transferred for a limited period of time from a business office established in a foreign country by a public or private organization which has a head office, branch office, or other business offices in Japan, and when the applicant was employed at the main office, branch office, or other offices outside of Japan immediately prior to their transfer to Japan during which time the applicant was engaged in duties that come under the category of "Researcher" as listed in the right-hand column of the Appended Table I (2) of the Act, and where the period was for a continuous period of one year or more (if the applicant has engaged in research at a business office in Japan with the status of residence of "Researcher," the total period with that period added);
一 大学（短期大学を除く。）を卒業し若しくはこれと同等以上の教育を受け若しくは本邦の専修学校の専門課程を修了（当該修了に関し法務大臣が告示をもって定める要件に該当する場合に限る。）した後従事しようとする研究分野において修士の学位若しくは三年以上の研究の経験（大学院において研究した期間を含む。）を有し、又は従事しようとする研究分野において十年以上の研究の経験（大学において研究した期間を含む。）を有すること。ただし、本邦に本店、支店その他の事業所のある公私の機関の外国にある事業所の職員が本邦にある事業所に期間を定めて転勤して当該事業所において研究を行う業務に従事しようとする場合であって、申請に係る転勤の直前に外国にある本店、支店その他の事業所において一年以上継続して法別表第一の二の表の研究の項の下欄に掲げる業務に従事している場合で、その期間（研究の在留資格をもって当該本邦にある事業所において業務に従事していた期間がある場合には、当該期間を合算した期間）が継続して一年以上あるときは、この限りでない。

a. materials demonstrating the overview of the inviting organization;

(ii) cases in which a staff member of a business office established in a foreign country by a public or private organization which has a head office, branch office or other business office in Japan seeks to engage in research by being transferred to the business office in Japan for a limited period of time:
二 本邦に本店、支店その他の事業所のある公私の機関の外国にある事業所の職員が本邦にある事業所に期間を定めて転勤して当該事業所において研究を行う業務に従事しようとする場合
a. document indicating the relationship between the business offices in the foreign country and the business office in Japan;
イ 外国の事業所と本邦の事業所の関係を示す文書
b. certificate of registered matters and a copy of the profit and loss statement, and materials demonstrating the content of business of the business office in Japan;

c. document proving the content of the duties and years of service at the business office in a foreign country (in cases where the applicant resided in Japan with the status of residence of "Researcher" within one year immediately prior to being transferred, including the business office in Japan where the applicant engaged in business during the period);
