Invite a Foreign Family / Employee from abroad -Long Stay-

VISA Requirement

A foreign national who wish to come to Japan is required to have a valid VISA on his/her passport. VISA is issued at a Japanese foreign delegate such as Embassy of Japan or Consulate-General of Japan.

Japan has mutual VISA exemption agreements with many countries and regions. This agreement allows you to come to Japan without VISA for short stay such as visiting a family, having a business meeting, etc. But, if a foreign national plans to work in Japan or stay with his/her family for a longer period, he/she must get a VISA at Embassy of Japan or Consulate-General of Japan before entering to Japan.

"Certificate of Eligibility(COE)" for a Status of Residence

A foreign family/employee may apply for an entry visa directly at the Embassy of Japan or Consulate-General of Japan abroad. However, the embassy does not have the applicant's information and is unable to decide whether or not to issue a visa, so it has to make inquiries to a local immigration bureau in Japan, which takes time.

On the other hand, by the process of "Certificate of Eligibility" system, an agent of a foreign national brings information to the local immigration bureau in Japan and the immigration reviews application documents. If the immigration bureau determines that he/she is eligible to enter Japan, they will issue a "Certificate of Eligibility". Once a "Certificate of Eligibility" is issued, the lead time of visa at the Embassy of Japan or Consulate-General of Japan is shortened.
