The Japanese Immigration laws define a unique status for a spouse of a Japanese national. (Note: is a foreign national who seeks a residency in Japan, and the others are his/her family.)

A spouse of Japanese national might be eligible for the status "Spouse or Child of Japanese national" 「日本人の配偶者等」.

Procedure

In case a spouse is outside of Japan

If a foreign spouse is out side of Japan, the best way to invite him/her is to get Certificate of Eligibility in advance in Japan. Certificate of Eligibility is a certificate issued by a head of regional immigration bureau to certify that a person meets the requirements for a status of residence.

A Japanese spouse in Japan may apply for at the nearest immigration office.

Once Certificate of Eligibility is issued, a spouse in Japan will ship Certificate of Eligibility abroad, and then a spouse will apply for a VISA at Japanese Embassy/General-Consulate. Details of the process.

In case a spouse is already in Japan

If a foreign spouse is already in Japan, he/she may apply for a change of status to "Spouse or Child of Japanese national" at an immigration office.
