To live with his/her family in Japan, a foreigner need to fulfill requirements of at least one of the "Status of Residence".

A spouse of a foreigner who is staying in Japan with Permanent Residency might be eligible for the status "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident" 「永住者の配偶者等」.

A spouse of a foreigner who is staying in Japan with "Long Term Resident" might be eligible for the status "Long Term Resident" 「定住者」.

A spouse of a foreigner who is staying in Japan with "Spouse or Child of Japanese national" might be eligible for the status "Long Term Resident" 「定住者」.

If a husband is staying in Japan under some status such as "Engineer", "Artist", etc, his wife might be eligible for "Dependent" 「家族滞在」, vice versa.
