"Religious Activities" or /shu-kyo/ in Japanese is one of "Status of Residence" defined by Japanese immigration law.
Persons qualified for "Religious Activities"
- monks, bishops, missionaries
"Period of Stay" will be determined among one of the followings.
5-year, 3-year, 1-year or 3-month.
Spouse and/or Children of a person who is staying in Japan under the status of "Religious Activities" will be qualified for the status "Dependent".

Followings are quotations from the immigration law/ordinance of the web site of Japanese government. However some of them were quoted before the revision in 2012. Therefore they might be old and different from the present rule.
Missionary and other religious activities conducted by foreign religious workers dispatched by a foreign religious organization.

(i) Document certifying the period dispatched by the dispatching organization and the alien's position and reward.
(ii) Material certifying the outlines of the dispatching and accepting organizations.
(iii) Document certifying the alien's position and career as a religious worker.
(i) Document certifying the continuance of the dispatch by the dispatching organization.
(ii) Certificate of the alien's annual income and amount of tax paid.
Employee of the Japanese branch of the foreign religious organization dispatching the alien or other affiliated religious organization in Japan.
