Followings are extracted from the web site of Japanese government. However, some of them might be old and different from the present rule. Please use at your own risk.
(i) Activities that fall under any of the following items (a) through (c) to be carried out by a person meeting the requirements provided by Ministry of Justice Order as a professional with highly-skilled capabilities, and are expected to contribute to the development of academic research or economy of Japan:
一 高度の専門的な能力を有する人材として法務省令で定める基準に適合する者が行う次のイからハまでのいずれかに該当する活動であつて、我が国の学術研究又は経済の発展に寄与することが見込まれるもの
(a) activities of research, research instruction or education based on a contract signed with a public or private organization in Japan designated by the Minister of Justice, activities of personally operating a business related to the activities in conjunction with those activities, or activities of research, research instruction or education based on a contract signed with a public or private organization in Japan other than the organizations designated by the Minister of Justice;
イ 法務大臣が指定する本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて研究、研究の指導若しくは教育をする活動又は当該活動と併せて当該活動と関連する事業を自ら経営し若しくは当該機関以外の本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて研究、研究の指導若しくは教育をする活動
(b) activities to engage in duties requiring knowledge or skills in the field of natural sciences or humanities based on a contract signed with a public or private organization in Japan designated by the Minister of Justice or activities to personally manage the business related to the activities in conjunction with those activities;
ロ 法務大臣が指定する本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて自然科学若しくは人文科学の分野に属する知識若しくは技術を要する業務に従事する活動又は当該活動と併せて当該活動と関連する事業を自ら経営する活動
(c) activities to operate international trade or some other business, or to engage in the management of such business at a public or private organization in Japan designated by the Minister of Justice, or in conjunction with these activities, activities to personally manage the business related to such activities.
ハ 法務大臣が指定する本邦の公私の機関において貿易その他の事業の経営を行い若しくは当該事業の管理に従事する活動又は当該活動と併せて当該活動と関連する事業を自ら経営する活動
(ii) The following activities carried out by a person who has engaged in the activities listed in the preceding item and who meets the requirements provided by Ministry of Justice Order as a person whose stay contributes to the interests of Japan:
二 前号に掲げる活動を行つた者であつて、その在留が我が国の利益に資するものとして法務省令で定める基準に適合するものが行う次に掲げる活動
(a) activities of research, research instruction or education based on a contract signed with a public or private organization in Japan;
イ 本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて研究、研究の指導又は教育をする活動
(b) activities to engage in duties requiring knowledge or skills in the field of natural sciences or humanities based on a contract signed with a public or private organization in Japan;
ロ 本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて自然科学又は人文科学の分野に属する知識又は技術を要する業務に従事する活動
(c) activities to operate business of international trade or other businesses at a public or private organization in Japan, or to engage in the management of those businesses;
ハ 本邦の公私の機関において貿易その他の事業の経営を行い又は当該事業の管理に従事する活動
(d) activities (except for the activities that fall under any of the items (a) through (c)) listed in the right-hand column of the "Professor" section to the "Journalist" section in Table (1) or the activities listed in the right-hand column in the "Legal/Accounting Services," "Medical Services," "Instructor," "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/ International Services," "Nursing Care," "Entertainer," or "Skilled Labor" sections, or in item (ii) of the right-hand column of the "Specified Skilled Worker" section in this Table, carried out in conjunction with any of the activities in items (a) through (c).
ニ イからハまでのいずれかの活動と併せて行う一の表の教授の項から報道の項までの下欄に掲げる活動又はこの表の法律・会計業務の項、医療の項、教育の項、技術・人文知識・国際業務の項、介護の項、興行の項若しくは技能の項の下欄若しくは特定技能の項の下欄第二号に掲げる活動（イからハまでのいずれかに該当する活動を除く。）

The applicant falls under all of the following requirements in addition to fulfilling the criteria listed in Article (1), paragraph (1) of the Ministerial Order to Provide for Criteria in the Right-Hand Column under "Highly Skilled Professional" as Specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Ministerial Order No. 37 of 2014).
申請人が出入国管理及び難民認定法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄の基準を定める省令（平成二十六年法務省令第三十七号）第一条第一項に掲げる基準に適合することのほか、次の各号のいずれにも該当すること。
(i) The applicant falls under any of the following requirements:
一 次のいずれかに該当すること。
(a) the activities which the applicant seeks to engage in Japan fall under any of the activities listed in the right-hand column corresponding to the categories under "Professor" to "Journalist" specified in the Appended Table I (1) of the Act;
イ 本邦において行おうとする活動が法別表第一の一の表の教授の項から報道の項までの下欄に掲げる活動のいずれかに該当すること。
(b) the activities which the applicant seeks to engage in while in Japan fall under any of the activities listed in the right-hand column corresponding to the categories under "Business Manager" to "Skilled Labor" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act, and fulfill the criteria listed in the right-hand column corresponding to the relevant activities in this Table;
ロ 本邦において行おうとする活動が法別表第一の二の表の経営・管理の項から技能の項までの下欄に掲げる活動のいずれかに該当し、かつ、この表の当該活動の項の下欄に掲げる基準に適合すること。
(ii) the activities which the applicant seeks to engage in Japan are not cases considered to be inappropriate from the perspective of influencing Japanese industries and lives of Japanese citizens.
二 本邦において行おうとする活動が我が国の産業及び国民生活に与える影響等の観点から相当でないと認める場合でないこと。

(i) in the case of a foreign national engaging in the activities listed in item (i) sub-items (a) through (c) of the right-hand column of "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act: 5 years
一 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第一号イからハまでに掲げる活動を行う者にあつては、五年
(ii) in the case of a foreign national engaging in the activities listed in item (ii) of the right-hand column of "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I(2) of the Act: indefinite period
二 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第二号に掲げる活動を行う者にあつては、無期限

(i) Cases in which the foreign national seeks to engage in the activities listed in item (i) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act:
一 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第一号に掲げる活動を行おうとする場合
a. materials listed in the right-hand column of the categories of "Professor" to "Journalist", or "Business Manager" to "Skilled Labor" specified in this Table in accordance with the activities which the foreign national seeks to conduct in Japan;
イ 本邦において行おうとする活動に応じて、この表の教授の項から報道の項まで又は経営・管理の項から技能の項までのいずれかの下欄に掲げる資料
b. materials listed in the following (1) to (3) in accordance with the category of the activities listed in (1) to (3) to be condeucted by the foreign national in Japan:
ロ 本邦において行おうとする次の（１）から（３）までに掲げる活動の区分に応じ、当該（１）から（３）までに掲げる資料
(1) activities listed in item (i) sub-item (a) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act: materials demonstrating that the foreign national falls under Article 1, paragraph (1), item (i) of the Ministerial Order to Provide for the Criteria in the Right-Hand Column Corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" as Specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Ministry of Justice Order No. 37 of 2014; hereinafter referred to as "Ministerial Order on Highly Skilled Professionals");
（１） 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第一号イに掲げる活動 出入国管理及び難民認定法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄の基準を定める省令（平成二十六年法務省令第三十七号。以下「高度専門職省令」という。）第一条第一項第一号に該当することを明らかにする資料
(2) activities listed in item (i) sub-item (b) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act: materials demonstrating that the foreign national falls under Article 1, paragraph (1), item (ii) of the Ministerial Order on Highly Skilled Professionals;
（２） 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第一号ロに掲げる活動 高度専門職省令第一条第一項第二号に該当することを明らかにする資料
(3) activities listed in item (i) sub-item (c) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act: materials demonstrating that the foreign national falls under Article 1, paragraph (1), item (iii) of the Ministerial Order on Highly Skilled Professionals
（３） 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第一号ハに掲げる活動 高度専門職省令第一条第一項第三号に該当することを明らかにする資料
(ii) cases in which the foreign national seeks to conduct the activities listed in item (ii) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I(2) of the Act:
二 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第二号に掲げる活動を行おうとする場合
a. materials listed in sub-item (b) of the preceding item;
イ 前号ロに掲げる資料
b. materials demonstrating that the period the foreign national conducted the activities listed in item (i) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I(2) of the Act while residing in Japan with the status of residence of "Highly Skilled Professional" (limited to those pertaining to the same item) was 3 years or longer;
ロ 高度専門職の在留資格（法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第一号に係るものに限る。）をもつて本邦に在留しながら同号に掲げる活動を行つた期間が三年以上であることを明らかにする資料
(c) document proving good behavior and conduct by the foreign national.

a. activities listed in item (i), sub-item (a) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act: materials demonstrating that the foreign national falls under Article 1, paragraph (1), item (i) of the Ministerial Order on Highly Skilled Professionals;
イ 法別表第一の二の表の高度専門職の項の下欄第一号イに掲げる活動 高度専門職省令第一条第一項第一号に該当することを明らかにする資料
b. activities listed in item (i), sub-item (b) of the right-hand column corresponding to "Highly Skilled Professional" specified in the Appended Table I (2) of the Act: materials demonstrating that the foreign national falls under Article 1, paragraph (1), item (ii) of the Ministerial Order on Highly Skilled Professional;
