"Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" or 'gi-jutsu/jin-bun-chi-shi-ki/ko-ku-sa-i-gyo-mu' in Japanese is one of "Status of Residence" defined by Japanese immigration law.
A foreign national who graduates from college or has equivalent practical experience can work in a Japanese company with the status of residence of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services".
Activities that can be conducted under the status of residence of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" can be roughly divided into three areas.
Area of "Engineer" -- Activities engaged in work that requires skills or knowledge belonging to the fields of science, engineering and other natural sciences
Activities in the area of "Engineer" need to be "activities requiring specialized skills or knowledge beyond a certain level on the background of academic sophistication". Work that utilizes so-called university-level expertise applies.
Specific fields include "mathematical science, physics science, chemistry, biology, anthropology, geoscience, geography, geophysics, science education, statistics, information science, nuclear science, basic engineering, applied physics, machinery engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, information engineering, civil engineering, architecture, metal engineering, applied science, resource development engineering, shipbuilding science, measurement and control engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, nuclear engineering, management engineering, agriculture, agricultural chemistry, forestry, fishery science, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, livestock science, veterinary medicine, silk science, home economics, regional agriculture, agricultural general science, physiological science, pathology science, medical science science, surgical science, social medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutical Sciences " are exemplified in the immmigration manual.
Area of "Specialist in Humanities" -- Activities engaged in business requiring knowledge belonging to the fields of law, economics, sociology and other humanities
Activities in the area of "Specialist in Humanities" need to be "activities requiring expert knowledge beyond a certain level on the background of academic sophistication". Work utilizes so-called university-level expertise applies.
Specific fields include "Language, Literature, Philosophy, Education (including Physical Education), Psychology, Sociology, History, Area Studies, Basic Law, Public Law, International Relations Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, Society Law, Political Science, Economic Theory, Economic Policy, International Economy, Economic History, Fiscal Studies, Financial Theory, Commercial Studies, Business Studies, Accounting, Economic Statistics " are exemplified in the immigration manaual.
Area of "International Services" -- Activities engaged in work requiring thought or susceptibility based on foreign culture
The activities in the area of "International Services" need to be "activities that require more than a certain level of professional abilities based on thought or susceptibility based on foreign cultures" acquired in a traditional culture of a foreign country, Interpretation, guidance of language, publicity, advertisement or overseas trading business, design related to clothing or interior decoration, product development and other similar activities are applicable.
Foreign nationals who wish to work in Japan under the status of residence of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" must fulfill one of the following requirements.

Contract with public and private organizations in Japan
Foreigners who are staying in Japan under the status of residence of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" need to do business based on contracts with public and private institutions in Japan. It corresponds to cases such as working at a company etc. based on employment contract.
"Period of Stay" will be determined among one of the followings.
5-year, 3-year, 1-year or 3-month.
Spouse and/or Children of a person who is staying in Japan under the status of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" will be qualified for the status "Dependent".

Activities to engage in duties which require skills or knowledge in the field of physical science, engineering, or other natural science fields, or in the field of jurisprudence, economics, sociology or other humanities fields, or to engage in duties which require the ways of thinking or sensitivity founded on foreign culture (except for the activities listed in the right-hand column of the "Professor," "Artist," and "Journalist" sections in Table (1), and the activities listed in the right-hand column of the "Business Manager" through "Instructor" sections, "Intra-Company Transferee" and "Entertainer" sections in this Table), based on a contract entered into with a public or private organization in Japan.

The applicant falls under all of the following requirements; provided, however, that this does not apply to cases where the applicant seeks to engage in services related to agency associated with the proceedings in an international arbitration case provided for in Article 58-2 of the Act on Special Measures Concerning the Handling of Legal Services by Foreign Lawyers (Act No. 66 of 1986);
申請人が次のいずれにも該当していること。ただし、申請人が、外国弁護士による法律事務の取扱いに関する特別措置法（昭和六十一年法律第六十六号）第五十八条の二に規定する国際仲裁事件の手続についての代理に係る業務に従事しようとする場合は、この限りでない。
(i) if the applicant seeks to engage in services that require skills or knowledge in the field of natural science or humanities, the applicant falls under any of the following requirements, and has acquired the skills and knowledge necessary for the duties; provided, however, that this does not apply if the applicant seeks to engage in duties that require skills and knowledge pertaining to information processing and has passed the examination related to information processing or holds a qualification related to information processing technology specified by the Minister of Justice in public notice;
一 申請人が自然科学又は人文科学の分野に属する技術又は知識を必要とする業務に従事しようとする場合は、従事しようとする業務について、次のいずれかに該当し、これに必要な技術又は知識を修得していること。ただし、申請人が情報処理に関する技術又は知識を要する業務に従事しようとする場合で、法務大臣が告示をもって定める情報処理技術に関する試験に合格し又は法務大臣が告示をもって定める情報処理技術に関する資格を有しているときは、この限りでない。
(a) the applicant has graduated from a university having majored in a subject related to the skills or knowledge, or has acquired an education equivalent thereto;
イ 当該技術若しくは知識に関連する科目を専攻して大学を卒業し、又はこれと同等以上の教育を受けたこと。
(b) the applicant has completed a specialized course of study at an advanced vocational school in Japan majoring in a subject related to the skills or knowledge (limited to cases where the applicant fulfills the requirements specified by the Minister of Justice in public notice regarding the completion);
ロ 当該技術又は知識に関連する科目を専攻して本邦の専修学校の専門課程を修了（当該修了に関し法務大臣が告示をもって定める要件に該当する場合に限る。）したこと。
(c) the applicant has at least 10 years of practical experience (including the period during which the applicant majored in a subject related to the skills or knowledge at a university, technical college, senior high school, the second semester course at a school for secondary education or a specialized course of study at an advanced vocational school);
ハ 十年以上の実務経験（大学、高等専門学校、高等学校、中等教育学校の後期課程又は専修学校の専門課程において当該技術又は知識に関連する科目を専攻した期間を含む。）を有すること。
(ii) if the applicant seeks to engage in services that require ways of thinking or sensibilities that have the foundation in a foreign culture, the applicant is to fall under all of the following requirements:
二 申請人が外国の文化に基盤を有する思考又は感受性を必要とする業務に従事しようとする場合は、次のいずれにも該当していること。
(a) the applicant is to engage in translation, interpretation, language instruction, public relations, advertising or overseas transactions, fashion or interior designs, product development, or other similar services;
イ 翻訳、通訳、語学の指導、広報、宣伝又は海外取引業務、服飾若しくは室内装飾に係るデザイン、商品開発その他これらに類似する業務に従事すること。
(b) the applicant has at least 3 years of experience in the services related to the services it seeks to engage in; provided, however, that this does not apply if the applicant who has graduated from university is to engage in translation, interpretation, or language instruction;

(iii) the applicant is to receive a remuneration equivalent to or greater than that a Japanese national receives for the same work.
