"Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" or 'gi-jutsu/jin-bun-chi-shi-ki/ko-ku-sa-i-gyo-mu' in Japanese is one of "Status of Residence" defined by Japanese immigration law.
A foreign national who graduates from college or has equivalent practical experience can work in a Japanese company with the status of residence of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services".

Area of "Specialist in Humanities" -- Activities engaged in business requiring knowledge belonging to the fields of law, economics, sociology and other humanities
Activities in the area of "Specialist in Humanities" need to be "activities requiring expert knowledge beyond a certain level on the background of academic sophistication". Work utilizes so-called university-level expertise applies.
Specific fields include "Language, Literature, Philosophy, Education (including Physical Education), Psychology, Sociology, History, Area Studies, Basic Law, Public Law, International Relations Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, Society Law, Political Science, Economic Theory, Economic Policy, International Economy, Economic History, Fiscal Studies, Financial Theory, Commercial Studies, Business Studies, Accounting, Economic Statistics " are exemplified in the immigration manaual.
Area of "International Services" -- Activities engaged in work requiring thought or susceptibility based on foreign culture
The activities in the area of "International Services" need to be "activities that require more than a certain level of professional abilities based on thought or susceptibility based on foreign cultures" acquired in a traditional culture of a foreign country, Interpretation, guidance of language, publicity, advertisement or overseas trading business, design related to clothing or interior decoration, product development and other similar activities are applicable.
Foreign nationals who wish to work in Japan under the status of residence of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" must fulfill one of the following requirements.

Contract with public and private organizations in Japan
Foreigners who are staying in Japan under the status of residence of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" need to do business based on contracts with public and private institutions in Japan. It corresponds to cases such as working at a company etc. based on employment contract.
"Period of Stay" will be determined among one of the followings.
5-year, 3-year, 1-year or 3-month.
Spouse and/or Children of a person who is staying in Japan under the status of "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" will be qualified for the status "Dependent".
